Students are required to have high school diplomas or the equivalent. They are not required to have a college degree to pursue a job in law enforcement. Course work in sociology, psychology and civics is helpful. When a person decides to go to school for Law Enforcement they must focus on either an associates or bachelors degree. These degrees do help students in the careers of Law Enforcement.
An Associate’s Degree is offered by community colleges and vocational schools. These programs are known as law enforcement administration, police science, or criminal justice. Some of the schools will work with the police academies to prepare students for training. An Associate’s Degree is a two year program. The coursework prepares students for investigating, collecting evidence, patrolling and apprehension.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor general police officers grossed $52,810, annually as of May 2008. There will be an increase in job growth from 2008-2018. Those who graduate with an associate’s degree will be ready for jobs locally and state wide.
Most police officers will continue their education beyond the Associate’s degree. They will go through training at state or regional police academies. Those who are looking to go into the federal law enforcement should go to school for a Bachelor’s Degree. At the bachelor’s level, the student will learn about administration and criminal justice. These programs will focus on criminology, the law and our justice system, as well as Interrogation and interview techniques. Some of the programs will lead the student to careers in corrections and crime scene investigations.
